What is an iPOD? (for the un-initiated)

An iPod is a portable digital audio player (MP3 player) designed by Apple Computer. iPod’s are now in their 5th generation and have video playback capability and a color screen in addition to their excellent audio capabilities.  Current iPods have the capability of storing tens of thousands of songs. The software for uploading music, photos, and video to the iPod is known as iTunes. Their Photo iPod loads and displays pictures- from computer only, and has TV output.

Are there any new developments with iPOD’s?

Apple recently announced a WiFI touchscreen iPod known as the iPod Touch.

MP3 Players

What is an MP3 Player? (for the non-audiophile)

An MP3 Player is a portable digital music player that allows you to store music from records, CD, tapes, etc. on a compact player.

What are some of the latest developments with portable audio?

Bluetooth is marching ahead in the quest to be wireless.  They have recently come out with a pair of 60W stereo wireless speakers.  These speakers allow you to use your iPod or other MP3 player, handheld, or mobile phone as a 2x60W stereo system.   Each speaker is independent with it’s own built-in amplifier.  The restriction is that the distance between the source and the speakers can be no more than 33 feet at this time.

Most MP3 players are shrinking in size.  It’s not uncommon now to find ones that are 2.5-3” high by 1.5” wide and only .75” deep.  These small players however pack in a lot of music for the true audiophile with some carrying up to a 10.0GB hard drive.  Larger MP3 models (CD size) have hard drives up to 20.0GB which can store roughly 4,000 songs.

Multi-media portables are now gaining popularity as they can allow you to enjoy watching full motion videos with your audio files.  Some models even allow viewing of digital images, graphic files, recording of voice, and can host a digital camera and a TV tuner.  Sport model MP3 players are also stepping up.  Oakley now has an MP3 Player that is built into sunglasses and Oregon Scientific has a water resistant player.

Podcasting

What is Podcasting?

We’ve been asked several times, and it fits in the portable audio file best!

Simply put, podcasting is webcasting.  Although the business industry is starting to tap into podcasting; it is first and foremost, amateur music and talk shows created by portable audio device (MP3 player) users.  It is internet based radio. Podcasting allows users to create and distribute audio (or video) files over the internet via RSS feed in most instance.  Listeners can then use personal computers to listen online or off line via portable devices such as MP3 Players.  (The term actually originated with the blending of the Apple iPod name and “broadcasting”.  However, an iPod is not the only device that can be used in podcasting.)  Any computer software that supports MP3 and any portable device that supports media download and playback can be used to listen to podcasts.
