The Rise of Video Calling on Smartphones

Posted on March 29, 2011 at 8:36 PM

In case you hadn't noticed, the number of smartphones with a front facing camera has taken a leap forward in the past several months. It's not correct to say that it's a majority, but it is certainly a noticeable trend. The purpose of this camera is primarily for the purpose of video calling.

Over the past few decades people have fairly consistently rejected the idea of video calling, they seem to simply dislike the idea of being seen by the people they communicate with by phone. Sure, we don't want to always have to look our best. But really, this makes little sense since users can pick and choose which calls use the interactive video. Of course, these surveys also didn't include the current generation of cell phone users who are, to say the least, more comfortable with what many older individuals consider to be non-traditional communication modes and the whole virtual world.

Anyway, back to the point. The Samsung Epic 4G, the iPhone, the HTC EVO 4G, HTC Thunderbolt, and T-Mobile myTouch 4G are just a few examples.

While younger users are sure to be the first to adopt this service, it would seem that far flung grandparents, and old married couples who are separated by business travel, might find a use for it as well. It may not surpass text messaging anytime soon, but this is your heads up that video calling seems to be poised to become the most recent trend in portable communication.
