Mobile Reader for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Posted on December 27, 2009 at 7:36 PM

I've discussed some of the options available for those with significant visual impairment in regards to mobile communications in the past. There are of course devices such as Blueant's V1 Bluetooth Voice Control headset and the Nuance Voice Control as well as a variety of screen readers to give users better access to cell phones. Software such as Dolphin's Smart Hal and Code Factory's Mobile Speak & TALKS are among the options for screen readers.

Unfortunately, cell phones for the blind that are true braille phones seem to be slow in coming to the market. However, another item that had slipped under my radar until recently is the KNFB Reader which is actually even more useful. It can be used with Symbian phones, specifically the Nokia N82 or N86 which allows users to snap shots of documents, labels, currency, and more and have it read aloud to them. This page reviews it's features and you can see a video review below.
