A Little Something for the Photographer on Your Christmas List

Posted on December 14, 2009 at 8:38 AM

We're always looking for the perfect gift; one that delights the receiver and doesn't break our budget either. If you have someone on your list who has, or is receiving a digital camera for Christmas, there are a number of accessory items that can be really appreciated.

No matter what digital camera your friend or loved one has, having enough memory is important.  Not having removable memory cards is like having a film camera without film. Memory cards are holding more and more images. Of course with more capacity comes a higher price tag. I find a 2 or 4GB memory card to be a great option. They hold alot, but can be found online for well under $20. If the photographer on your list is inclined to use a burst mode or continuous shooting mode a high speed card is often needed. Of course, for those who want to be able to transfer their photos without using cables there are also WiFi memory cards that allow them to do the transfer remotely.  In fact some of these cards allow you to geotag photos as well. Certainly, these cards are convenient but also a bit pricier. Of course long term storage and back up of photos is also critical. Photo backup options include DVD disks, external hard drives and so forth.  More great gift ideas.

Another possible gift item are supplies that allow users to properly care for their camera lens.  The lens is the most crucial, and most expensive part of nearly any camera. Taking proper care of the lens can assure better pictures and the life of the camera itself.  Items like lens pens, microfiber cloths, blower brushes, and so forth assure that users have the proper camera lens cleaning tools and make for great stocking stuffers.

A bit more expensive, there are also tripods.  Some are as unobtrusive as a bottle top and others are larger but very flexible allowing the user to attach it to nearly anything to assure a steady shot.  Many professionals agree that a camera tripod is the single best piece of additional equipment to use when trying to improve the quality of the photos you take.  Another critical piece of equipment is a camera bag.  For those with simple needs, a bag that snugly fits the camera, a memory card, and some batteries, can be quite compact but go a long way in protecting the camera from falls and a little inclement weather, and so forth.  For those who are a bit more serious, there needs to be room for lenses, filters, a tripod and other items they wish to carry.  They are very convenient, but very necessary in many instances.

Certainly special lenses and filters can also be welcomed items. Polarizer and UV filters are common to reduce glare and to protect the lens. Telephoto lenses are good for those who want more ability to get close to distant objects and wide angle lenses are great when you want to fit more within the frame.  However, it's critical to know if the lens selected will fit the camera and so these usually need to be selected by the person who will use it.

Then of course, there are those who use camera phones.  There are dozens of small affordable camera phone accessories that can enhance the performance of these devices.  Add on lenses, flash lights, filters, and much more are available.
