It's becoming increasingly evident that soon owning both a standalone digital camera and a standalone camcorder will be unnecessary. The abilities of cameras to capture good video and camcorders to capture good stills continue to improve.
There are of course a number of digital cameras with HD video capability. Certainly the ability to record HD video isn't the only qualification necessary to make a camera capable of performing feats that match those of a camcorder, but it is a start. Good lenses and sensors are important, but so too are things like optical image stabilization, decent sound recording, the ability to zoom while filming, manual controls, and plenty of scene modes.
I would add the Panasonic Lumic DMC FZ35 to the list of digital cameras that do a reasonable job of video recording. This 12 megapixel camera has an 18x optical zoom Leica lens, optical image stabilization, autofocus and plenty of manual controls. Shutter priiority and aperture priority modes are available as well as full manual exposure control. However, it also has a variety of scene modes including Portrait, Sports, Landscape, Macro, and Low Light. You can learn more about it here:
