A few days ago I blogged a bit about looking at the numbers closely when trying to compare prepaid cell phone plans. Looking at the potential existence of a daily access fee in addition to the per minute fee is obviously important. In my investigation into plans, I also found that some of these services offer special deals that can significantly shift they way things look as far as who provides the most affordable service.
As an example, I found that Tracfone per minute costs, although higher than Net10 , can be brought in line fairly quickly when users are able to take advantage of their Double Minutes for Life Card . Apparently, if a user purchases a DM4L card for a one time $49.99 fee, they can then load a 15 digit pin on their Tracfone handset, and from that point forward they will get twice as many minutes as they buy. So, if they purchase 30 minutes of airtime, they will actually get to use 60 minutes at no additional cost. If you don't keep the service, or that particular handset for more than a few months, this obviously isn't very economical based on the additional $49.99 fee. However, if the service and handset are used over a period of a year or more, this would greatly reduce the overall cost and cut the airtime minute cost in half. Clearly, like any deal, the conditions have to work for you.
