Waterproof devices are increasing in number. This may be due to our active lifestyles or, even more likely, due to our desire to make the most of our limited time. I've discussed waterproof cameras which also tend to be built to resist damage due to a drop, dust in the environment, and even cold temperatures. Of course, waterproof camcorders and even cell phones were next.
Now, for those who are water sports enthusiasts, there are MP3 players built to operate even while submerged under water. The depths at which they can operate varies as does the sound quality and volume that you can get from them. One of the newer options is the Finis SwiMP3 which uses bone conduction rather that air conduction via earphones to transmit the soundwaves to your inner ear. This results in an improved audio performance. The transmitter is worn over a bony prominence such as the cheek bone and earplugs are generally warn to occlude the ear canal. They can attach to a swimmer's goggles or swim mask for a good fit and will operate at depths of 10 feet or less.
For those who prefer kayaking, surfing, or other water sports, the SwimP3 Surf is the better option as it offers an armband model when goggles are seldom worn. The audio of these waterproof MP3 players is gradually improving but the number of features they offer is still well behind that of other players. However, they do provide the music that so many crave when swimming laps. The SwiMP3 player can be found online for under $135.
