News in the World of TV

Posted on May 21, 2009 at 9:23 PM

It's been some months since I've discussed any of the latest news related to TV technology, so it's probably time that I do some updating.

OLED televisions have been assumed to be the next great thing in TV technology for the past couple of years.  They are capable of producing a superior picture with their ability to display more colors and deeper blacks than LCD or plasma displays. They handle fast motion scenes with ease, have a ultra thin profile, and reportedly consume significantly less energy than other current options. A year or so ago, Sony introduced the first commercially available OLED TV.  It was the 11" XEL-1.  Since then, all has been quite on showroom floors as far as a more living room friendly OLED.  Until now.  Panasonic announced earlier this month that they will be bringing a 40" OLED to showroom floors in 2010; certainly this will be something better suited to larger rooms.

3D TV is another technology of interest.  Obviously gaming and sports entertainment would never be the same with 3D viewing.  One of the most interesting 3D introductions was Philips WOWvx3D.  It allowed viewers the capability of enjoying 3D content without 3D glasses. (You can learn more about it below) However, the news is, that Philips will be closing it's 3D operations for now. This is due in part to the lack of 3D content available in the current market, the pricing of the displays, and the current economic slowdown.
